Long friendships sometimes drift apart quietly, through nothing more dramatic than distance and neglect, and it is often a single honest question, asked after years of silence, that reopens a connection everyone had assumed was simply over.

The question that works best in these moments tends to be plain rather than elaborate, something close to I have missed talking with you, is everything alright, asked without excessive apology or an attempt to explain away the years of silence first.

What repairs the friendship is rarely the explanation that follows, but the fact that someone was willing to ask directly at all, choosing the small risk of an awkward reply over the safer, more permanent silence.

Friendships repaired this way often become stronger than they were before the silence, since both people now know the relationship can survive an honest, slightly awkward question, a confidence that untested friendships have not yet had the chance to build.
