The Art of the Follow Up Question

A first question opens a door, but it is often the follow up question that actually walks through it, pressing gently on a detail the first answer only touched on briefly before moving elsewhere.
Good follow up questions rarely arrive from a prepared list; they grow directly out of what was just said, which means they require genuine listening rather than simply waiting for a turn to ask the next scripted item.
Skilled interviewers treat the follow up as the real work of a conversation, since the first answer to almost any question tends to be the most rehearsed one, while the second, prompted by a good follow up, is often the truest.
This is also why transcripts of great interviews often read less impressively than the recordings themselves, since so much of the follow up question's power lives in its timing, a beat that a page of text can describe but never fully recreate for a reader.
